You might feel personally attacked with this one.
We all fall for this in different areas and aspects in our life. I’m as guilty as anyone. It is human nature to do this.
If the roof over your head was leaking in multiple rooms of your house, you wouldn’t just accept that and avoid those rooms, would you? Of course not! You’d call up the local roofing company or your handyman friend to come check it out. Then you’d make a plan and fix it so your whole house doesn’t turn into a community swimming pool.
So why are you treating your health this way?
Maybe
You get hurt
You have a nagging injury
You’ve gained 20 pounds
You suffer from depression or anxiety
Your relationship is suffering
You aren’t getting the recognition you want at work
The list goes on, but either way, you have a problem. You usually have two choices in these scenarios.
You can accept the problem as “it is what it is” and avoid taking the necessary actions to try and improve the situation. This is the easier way to deal with it. You’ve fallen for The Lazy Man’s Trap.
You stop doing things you enjoy or do them at a lower level because of the pain, added weight, or unhappiness.
You shut down on those around you instead of addressing your feelings.
Then there is option two. Acknowledging the problem and addressing it head on. This is hard and usually will take a great deal of time, effort, and determination. You’ll need to be completely honest with yourself and most likely have some extremely uncomfortable conversations with those around you.
Once you acknowledge the problem you find ways to address it to find solutions.
You find exercises that work directly on your injury to not just improve it but make it stronger than ever.
You hire a personal trainer to hold you accountable and provide you with the tools needed to lose weight and then actually keep it off.
You tell your spouse that you’re struggling and need help to regain your sense of self.
You actively go out of your way to do everything in your power to address the problem in order to improve your quality of life. The payoff is obvious. So why don’t more people take the actions required? Why accept a lower quality life? Maybe you lack the tools and knowledge to do something about it. That is OKAY. Believe it or not, you aren’t required to know everything about everything. That is why we have professionals like personal trainers (like me:), physical therapists, doctors, etc.
As part of the process, you more than likely will need the help of one of these professions. You can’t do it by yourself and in today’s world with the wide range of services provided to people online and in person you don’t have to! I do my therapy online through BetterHelp. I run an online fitness business as do 89349371 other personal trainers. The ability to access these services is more available than ever if only you’d choose to utilize them to enhance your life.
It might cost you a bit of money up front, but in the long run it is going to give you back time, energy, and enjoyment of life. Compare that fee to what is the cost of inaction will be over the long haul and tell me which option is more worth investing in?
What are you accepting instead of acknowledging?
What are you avoiding instead of addressing?
Who can help you?
