I really enjoy reading. It isn’t always easy to read due to time constraints or having my book handy, but I try to read as often as I can. During the pandemic I found a new passion of reading about philosophy, more specifically Stoic philosophy. Largely inspired by the work of Ryan Holiday, I dove down the rabbit hole of Stoicism and found it fascinating, insightful, and practical to utilize the lessons in my everyday life.
My rabbit hole eventually led me to read “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius. Meditations is essentially Marcus Aurelius’ personal journal in which he writes the lessons he learns while being emperor of Rome. I really enjoyed that style of writing, so I decided to start my own version of Meditations about a year ago at the end of the month.
At first, I mostly was going to make it a journal just for myself, but I like sharing too much, so I decided to turn it into a book of lessons, thoughts, reflections, letters, and events that I will one day pass on to my kiddos. I’ve made 99 entries in a little under a year, usually anywhere from 5-10 per month and sometimes more.
I plan on giving the book to my oldest son when he graduates high school, so I have about 16 more years to write this book. Thankfully there are a lot of pages in the journal that I chose to buy! So in that time there could potentially be close to 2000 entries for my kids to read that came directly from my brain.
I usually go back and read through it once a month just to remind myself of the lessons I’ve learned, the feelings I’ve felt, and events that have come and gone. It is never too late to start something like this for your loved ones and is a great therapy tool to utilize.
